Book Review: Seek and Find: More Old Testament Bible Stories (Parker/Parker)

Seek and Find more Old Testament Book Cover

This book is awesome. My boys really enjoyed the first one, and I’m happy to have the next volume now. This volume moves through eight different stories:

  • Abraham and Sarah (Gen 18);
  • Joseph’s dream (with his angry brothers, Gen 37);
  • Joseph in Egypt (Gen 41–45);
  • The Red Sea (Exodus 14);
  • Strong Samson (Judg 14);
  • Elijah and the Fire (1 Kgs 18);
  • Songs for God (Ps 23);
  • Brave Esther (the book of Esther).

Each story is illustrated over its own two-page spread with a brief explanation of that story and ten different items to search for. The amount of whatever you need to search for corresponds with its number. While you only need to search for “1. One trusting Moses”  in the midst of the Red Sea, you also search for (#3) three nippy crabs 🦀, (#6) six wavy anemones, (#7) seven free Israelites, and (#10) ten purple seaweeds.

The illustrations are clear, bright, and colorful. They are really fun and well done. In the picture above, the fire from heaven engulfing Elijah’s sacrifice seems to be glowing. As Moses leads Israel through the tunnel of the Red Sea walls, there is light coming from the end of the tunnel. This light at the end of the tunnel leads to salvation. The Parkers present to us Abraham, pushing Isaac on a rope swing in their “front yard,” surrounded by proper family mess. All this shows that there is a normal, sweet, messy life inside and outside of their tent. Also, notice the little Noah’s ark toy with animals nearby.

This is probably best for kids 4–8. This could be used when you read one of these Bible stories to your kids, perhaps in the morning. After reading it, you could give them this book and ask them to find the items on the page as a simple way to reinforce the story.

Alternatively, you could choose a spread for your child(ren) to look through while you read the story alongside. Of course, that assumes your kids will actually look at those two pages and won’t flip to the next seek and find story. But such is life with kids.

Recommended?

This is a short book on a few important Old Testament stories. Many more stories could have been added, but what is here is well done.

Pair this with Seek and Find New Testament, the first Seek and Find Old Testament volume, Seek and Find Christmas, and Welcome to BibleWorld (review).
