Book Review: The Friends and the Traveller (Brewster/Green)

.
The Friends and the Traveller (“traveler” spelled the British way) rehearses the story of the two travelers on the Emmaus road. It tells of their sadness and grief, their confusion and, eventually, awe. Yet they meet a traveler, one who amazes them. He amazes the travelers with his words and use of Scripture. He opens their understanding, showing how Jesus fulfills the Old Testament as the one who crushes the head of the serpent, who is like the ram in Isaac’s place, the lamb who blood helped rescue helpless slaves (at Passover). There are more examples, but I don’t want to spoil it all now. The travelers are filled with awe, not understanding how they never saw those connections before.
.
When they arrive home to eat, (and this was the first time I saw how this would be significant), it was not either of the men who broke the bread in their own house (whoever’s house it was). It was the traveler who broke the bread! It was only then that they understood they were speaking with Jesus. The travelers were no longer griever, or afraid, or confused. They were now overjoyed. The book ends with the travelers and their friends meeting Jesus again, the one who is the center of God’s plan.

This was a nice retelling of an incredible biblical story. I don’t know of any other children’s book based on this story (although that doesn’t mean there aren’t any). This book reminds us and teaches your children that just as those two travelers walked along the road with Jesus, being patiently taught by him, so Jesus walks with us today, even though he is not with us, and he teaches us patiently to know him as he is revealed in God’s word.
